Agape Books: Discovering the Magic by Katie Shaykin

Emerson Sharp was your average 12-year-old sixth grader with nagging parents determined to have her pick her profession before she entered high school. She was not an overachiever, or an underachiever, just your regular, old, run-of-the-mill sixth grader trying to fit in with life.

Perhaps that’s why Emerson was so surprised when Ms. Agape, owner of Agape Books, chose to reveal her magical secret to plain old Emerson. You see, Ms. Agape’s secret mystery reader books allowed children to transform into any profession they wanted to try, but just for one day! In the morning, they would wake up and think it was just a dream.

But not for Emerson. Emerson had the special gift; the force if you will, which allowed her to see that Ms. Agape’s magic was real! Now she was faced with this amazing secret; and a boat load of decisions to go with it. So, when Ms. Agape askes Emerson if she wants to join her world of magic, what would this regular, run-of-the-mill 12-year-old decide? Would she fear away from the adventure, or embrace the unknown and step out of her ordinary reputation? And what’s more, what would happen when her best friend, Reagan, gets in on the secret and happens to have the force, too?

Agape Books: Discovering the Magic is designed to be the first of a series of middle grade fantasy novels that teach children to harness the power of their imaginations, and to give them the confidence to be anything they want to be. The books approach magic from a fun and whimsical perspective, allowing innocent young readers the excitement of magic without the fear that comes from some spookier titles.
